Former Hastings resident, Agnes L. Hynes, 99, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Rosary will be Monday, May 2, 2016; 7:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016; 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016; 1:30 P.M. in Roseland Cemetery, Roseland, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday, May 2, 2016; 9:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M. with family present 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.
Agnes was born July 16, 1916 to Michael and Margaret (Graney) Sullivan at their home near Riverton, Nebraska, the youngest of five children. She grew up in the Riverton area and graduated from high school in 1934 as Valedictorian of her class. Agnes, as a young child, enjoyed riding horses with her brother Bernard.
Agnes attended Kearney Normal school and obtained a Teaching Certificate. She taught school for 7 years in central Nebraska, later meeting James Hynes at a dance. Agnes and James were married in Red Cloud, Nebraska on November 28, 1942 and made their home on a farm south of Holstein, Nebraska. To their union eight children were born.
Agnes was a very active and helpful farm wife. She had large vegetable gardens, raised chickens and enjoyed the Logan Homemaker's Extension Club and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church Altar Society. She was an advocate of education and enjoyed political discussions.
James and she retired from farming and moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1975. Agnes enjoyed caring for her flowers, mowing her yard, attending Daily Mass and visiting with her children, grandchildren and neighbors. Agnes moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 2008.
Agnes had an abiding love for her Catholic faith and was able to attend Mass daily until her final days.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, James; infant son, Stephen; grandson, David Bank; and siblings, Michael Sullivan, Germaine Kyle, Mary Mooney and Bernard Sullivan.
