Albertus Lay

April 1, 1916 — February 8, 2005

Glenvil resident, Albertus N. Lay, 88, of 9335 South Blaine, died Friday, February 4, 2005 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Tuesday, February 8, 2005; 1:30 P.M. at Hanover Presbyterian Church near Glenvil, Nebraska, with Pastor Lloyd Boyce officiating. Burial will be in Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery.

Mr. Lay was born April 1, 1916 in Pauline, Nebraska to Roelf & Amena (DeVoogd) Lay. He graduated from Pauline High School, Pauline, Nebraska in 1934. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hastings College in 1938 and his Masters Degree in School Administration from the University of Nebraska in 1942. He met Rachel Sass at Ogallala, Nebraska where both were teaching. They were married at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner, Nebraska on June 14, 1942. They were married for 62+ years. He was a member of Pi Gamma Mu National Honor Society at Hastings College. He was a principal, coach and taught mathematics and science at Thayer, Nebraska and also at Grafton, Nebraska. He coached and taught mathematics at Ogallala, Nebraska and then was the superintendent and coach at Glenvil, Nebraska. From 1945-1979, he taught mathematics and coached at Fremont Senior High School in Fremont, Nebraska. He was a basketball and football coach at the different schools. He was a member of the Fremont Education Association, Nebraska State Education Association, National Education Association, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was a member of Who's Who in Nebraska. After he retired from teaching in 1979 at Fremont, they moved to their farm near Glenvil. He continued to farm to the present day. In his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He lettered in track while attending Hastings College. While living in Fremont, he officiated many basketball games, the most memorable was a game between the Harlem Globe Trotters and the Fremont city basketball team. He was an avid hunter and outdoors man. He was a member of Fremont Presbyterian Church and attended Hanover Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Lay was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gary Lay.

Memorial may be given to Hanover Presbyterian Church

VISITATION: Sun. 2-6-3pm-9pm
Mon. 2-7-05; 9am-9pm with family present 7pm-9pm
Tue. 2-8-05; 9am-11am at LBV
Tue. 2-8-05; 1 hr. prior to service at the church
