Hastings resident, Alice J. Marvel, 74, of 1380 East 12th Street, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at her home.
Alice was born December 3, 1933 in Brush, Colorado to Floyd & Irma (Feddersen) Hansen. She moved with her family to Hastings, Nebraska in 1934. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1951 and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education in 1955 and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Primary Education in 1956 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. On June 14, 1954, she married John Marvel. She was a beloved wife and mother, and she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Outlook Book Club, Chapter HT P.E.O., and YWCA Board of Directors. She also volunteered at Hastings Literacy and the election counting board, as well as being an avid tennis player, reader, artist, crossword puzzle-solver, and bridge player.
Alice Marvel was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Hansen. Survivors include husband, John N. Marvel, Hastings, NE; daughter and grandson, Lisa Marvel, Salida, CO and Michael Dunlap, Garland, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joachim Wunderlich, Hastings, NE; son, Steven Marvel, Hastings, NE; son and daughter-in-law, David and Robin Marvel, Wyoming, MN; sister, Margaret Scanlan, Lakewood, CO; sister, Betty Maroney, Albuquerque, NM; brother and sister-in-law, Robert & Lona Hansen, Wray, CO; twin sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and John Cookson, Denison, IA. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A private family service and urn interment will be held with no visitation or viewing. Memorials may be given to Hastings Public Library or Hastings Literacy Program.
