Alta Schiffler

April 6, 1917 — April 9, 2008

Hastings resident, Alta M. Schiffler, 91, of 702 South Denver, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Saturday, April 12, 2008; 10:00 A.M. at Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, Hastings, Nebraska, with Rev. David L. Speicher officiating. Burial will be in the Mennonite Cemetery, rural Roseland, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Alta M. Schiffler Memorial Fund. Visitation will be Friday, April 11, 2008; 1PM-9PM at the funeral home & Saturday, April 12, 2008, 1 hr. prior to service at the church.

Mrs. Schiffler was born on April 6, 1917 in Clay County, Nebraska to Henry & Lucy (Long) Schmidt. She graduated from Edgar High School and married C. Marion Schiffler on January 17, 1943 in Hastings. He preceded her in death April 30, 1988. They lived on a farm near Roseland, Nebraska for 16 years where she particularly enjoyed raising chickens, which led to her extensive collection of eclectic hen & roaster sets. In 1959, they moved to Kenesaw and in 1964 to Hastings where she lived in the same house until October, 2007. She was a homemaker and later worked at the Hastings Regional Center and Good Samaritan Village in nursing. She was a member of Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, where she was known for her ability to quote scripture and was a Sunday school teacher. As a girl, she taught herself to play the piano, which she continued to do for many years. A Depression Era survival, she learned to be very frugal. She was an avid gardener and was known for her irises in Spring and African violets in her home. She called on shut ins regularly, bringing hospitality and garden produce, until she lost her ability to drive She will be remembered for her homemade bread, pies, fried chicken, home churned butter and quilting. Declining health took her to Perkins Pavilion.

Mrs. Schiffler was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marion, four brothers and three sisters.
