Hastings resident, Anna "Vernell" Meerschant, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 12, 2014.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at All Peoples Praise Center, 3075 South Academy Boulevard, Suite #100, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Inurnment will follow. If sending flowers, have the florist deliver to the church at the above address, Friday, October 17 between 3:00-5:00 P.M.
Vernell was born on August 31, 1927 in Bonesteel, South Dakota, the youngest child of Axel and Anna Johnson. After high school, Vernell left for Hastings, Nebraska to live with her sister, Mabel. That is where she started her career as a telephone operator. This is also where she met her husband Chappell Blane Redd who was a marine stationed at the Naval Ammunition Depot. They were married in Colorado Springs on June 30, 1949. Together they had four children, Jerry, Ron, Nancy, and Rick. They lived a full life moving often as being in the military required. They moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1964 when Chappell retired from the Marine Corps. Vernell worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company until she retired in 1990. Chappell died of lung cancer on March 15, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her son, Ron who died on May 21, 1980. Vernell married Eugene (Gene) Meerschant on October 17, 1992 and enjoyed a life full of grandchildren, friends, and traveling. Gene died on June 8, 2004. Vernell then moved to Hastings in May of 2006 to be closer to her daughter.
Vernell was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Chappell Redd and Eugene Meerschant; son, Ron Redd; 3brothers and 2 sisters.
