Arthur Borrell, Sr

Hastings resident, Arthur A. Borrell, Sr., 74, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, September 12, 2009; 11:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, Nebraska, following the service. Visitation will be Thursday, September 10, 2009; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M., Friday, September 11, 2009; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M., and Saturday, September 12, 2009; 1 hour prior to service at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the family.

Art was born May 4, 1935 in Juniata, Nebraska to Charles Samual & Anna (Koler) Borrell. He attended Hastings High School. Art served in the U.S. Air Force. He married Shirley Fitzke on June 23, 1956 in Hastings, Nebraska. He helped build the old Elks golf course. In 1957, they moved to San Diego, California where he worked at Cal Western University for three years. The family returned to Hastings where Art worked for Dutton Lainson for four years. Then they returned to San Diego where Art worked for Shell Oil for the next 12 years. During this time in San Diego, they enjoyed going desert dune buggying. They also opened their house to many service men from Nebraska and across the country. In 1970, they returned to Hastings where Art worked for Great Plains Container and retired from there in 1997. After retirement, Art & Shirley moved to Republican City, Nebraska. They spent a lot of time fishing and cruising Harlan County Reservoir on their pontoon. Art enjoyed fixing anything people brought to him that needed repaired. Art was also a member of the Eagles.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger; sister, Barb; and brothers, Sam and Leonard.
