Bella Tews

Former Hastings resident, Bella Tews, 97, of Tiffany Square, Grand Island, Nebraska, died Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Tiffany Square.

Graveside service and burial will be Tuesday, July 17, 2007; 11:00 A.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Adam White officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 17, 2007; 9 A.M. until service time. Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Mrs. Tews was born on the family farm in Fillmore County, Nebraska, on October 7, 1909, to Martin & Martha (Underdahl) Kalberg. She graduated from York High School in 1928. She moved to Hastings in 1929, where she was employed at Brach's Department Store. She married Karl F. Tews on September 18, 1931 at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska. They were married more than 66 years before her husband's death on July 15, 1998. She was a business associate with her husband in the ownership and operation of Stop and Shop Market for many years. The couple retired in 1966. The couple moved to Riverside Lodge Retirement apartment in 1989. Recently, she had been a resident of Tiffany Square. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. She was a charter member of Does. She bowled on the Grandmother's Bowling League at the YMCA for more than 24 years.

Mrs. Tews was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Karl; a daughter, Lillian J. Sprague; three brothers and one sister.
