Hastings resident, Bernard D. Engel, 93, passed away Monday, January 9, 2017 at his home.
Services will be Saturday, January 14, 2017; 10:30 A.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, January 13, 2017; 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. with family present at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Bernard was born April 25, 1923 in Inland, Nebraska to Fred & Allie (Flesner) Engel. He graduated from Inland High School in 1940, and then attended the Nebraska College of Commerce in Hastings, Nebraska. In 1941, he worked for the Civil Service in the war department in Washington, D.C. He entered the Army Air Force on April 1, 1943 and was discharged on November 21, 1945, and served in World War II. He was overseas for 13 months and was in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in India and the Marianas Islands.
After his military service, he returned to Hastings and married Lois I. Von Spreckelsen on January 18, 1946. During their 63 years of marriage, Bernard and Lois, along with family and friends, were able to take numerous vacation trips, covering many of the 50 states as well as parts of Canada. She preceded him in death on March 19, 2008. He worked as a carpenter and retired from full-time work in 1986, but continued working part-time. He was a member of the First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #11. Bernard was a devoted husband and father, who was loved and respected by everyone whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed. Our loss is Heaven's gain.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois I. Engel; and four siblings, Arnold L. Engel, Mildred Komrofske, Chester D. Engel, and Lois M. Johnson.
