Former Hastings resident, Betty M. Hanzel, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Rosary will be Friday, January 25, 2013; 1:00 P.M. and services will be at 1:30 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Crossroads Center Rescue Mission of Hastings or Hastings Catholic Schools Endowment Fund. Visitation will be Thursday, January 24, 2013; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family greeting friends from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., and Friday, January 25, 2013; 9:00 A.M. - 1:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
Betty was born December 31, 1926 in Fontanelle, Nebraska to Albert J. & Alice C. (Jessen) Jenson. She graduated from Oakland High School in Oakland, Nebraska. Betty married John A. Hanzel in Fremont, Nebraska on September 25, 1946; he preceded her in death on February 6, 1970. She was a co-owner of Hanzel Maytag & Appliance Store from 1961 until 1970 when John passed away; she owned and operated the business from 1970 until 1985. Betty was involved in the Foster Grandparent Program and volunteered at Morton School and Gingerbread Child Care for 15 years. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John A. Hanzel; son, Jeff Hanzel; and brother, Harold Jenson.
