Former Hastings resident, Betty Lou Madden, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014; 6:30 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel with Father Patrick Barvick officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014; 3:00 P.M. - 6:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial with military rites by The United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas will be in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas on Thursday, September 18, 2014; 10:00 A.M. Father Joseph Popelka will officiate at the burial service. Memorials may be given to St. Michael's Catholic Church or Hastings Catholic Schools Trust. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Private condolences may be sent at www.lbvfh.com.

Betty was born October 30, 1922 in Topeka, Kansas to John Lanehart Madden, Sr. & Exzelia E. (Boudreau) Madden. Betty earned her Master's Degree in nursing and joined the U.S. Army and served as a nurse from 1948 until she retired in 1970. She retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. She moved in 1970 from Ft. Sam Houston, Texas to Hastings. Betty was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She received many military honors including: National Defense Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John L. Madden, Jr.; and one sister, Marjorie J. Weber.
