Hastings resident, Beulah Marie Potter, 94, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.
Beulah chose to be cremated and did not wish to have a service. Memorials may be given to Hastings College.
Beulah was born on April 17, 1916, the daughter of Pearl & Jessie Daugherty, on a farm two miles south of Hastings. She attended District 60 through the 8th grade and graduated from Hastings High School in 1934. She attended Kearney State College for one year, and then taught school in Districts 24 and 76 for four years. She then returned to Kearney State College for one year and Hastings College for two years majoring in History, Political Science and English, graduating summa cum laude in 1941. She belonged to Chi Omega Psi. After teaching high school she attended the University of Nebraska where she received her Master of Arts degree with honors in 1946. She met her future husband, Harry Evan Potter in 1946 while teaching at Fairbury Junior College, and they were married February 14, 1947 in Hastings. They lived in Omaha until 1958, when they moved back to the family farm in Hastings. Beulah taught 3 more years at Hansen and District 60 before retiring. In her retirement years she and Harry had an antique shop and were well known in the antique trade. Her husband Harry died on December 5, 1996. Beulah had a lifelong love of learning, especially history and politics. She defended her political position with great vigor. She leaves many friends of all ages and will be remembered by all.
