Joyce was born on August 1, 1924 to Clarence and Mabel Callahan of Fromberg, Montana. She was educated in the Fromberg schools, played on the girl's high school basketball team and graduated in 1941. She attended Montana State College where she earned academic honors in Economics and Home Economics. She traveled to Alameda, California and worked at United Engineering in the Accounting Office where she met her future husband. On May 29, 1945 she married Robert Schultz of rural Hastings. Together they raised Robert Jr. and Albert. Kathleen, Patricia, and David were born to this union. Joyce assisted her husband in his auto businesses as a bookkeeper. She went on to work as a secretary at several local businesses and at Hastings College as the Dean's secretary. She completed her career at J. M. McDonald Company as secretary to the president. Joyce was a long-time member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings where she was active in Lutheran Women and taught Sunday school. She was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader and a PTA member. She faithfully prayed with her children and read to them the beloved Laura Ingall's Wilder series of "Little House" books. She inspired all 5 of her children to seek a higher education. Later, Joyce was active in League of Women Voters, Adams County Extension Club, YWCA, Quilt Guild, and Eastern Star. She was a lifelong learner and loved to read, garden, cook, and dance. She also loved music and played piano beautifully. She taught her children by example, a concern for those less fortunate.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert Schultz, an infant son, Charles, and sister, Patricia Yates.
