Carl Brown

Hastings resident, Carl Brown, 74, of 2418 West 11th Street, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Veterans Medical Center, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Celebration of life will be Saturday, May 19, 2007; 2PM-4Pm at his home at 2418 West 11th Street, Hastings, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hastings Public Library or Central Community College Foundation.

Mr. Brown was born August 27, 1932 in Loup City, Nebraska to Cornell H. & Victoria (Zaruba) Brown. He graduated from Loup City High School and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Northern Colorado and his Masters Degree from University of Nebraska, Kearney, Nebraska. He married Mershonne Knecht in Loup City, Nebraska on September 12, 1953. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from July 8, 1954 to June 7, 1956. He taught math in Thermopolis, Wyoming before moving to Hastings, Nebraska in 1967. He was an early proponent of energy conservation, establishing a program for conservation & alternative sources at Central Community College in the 1970's. He taught Electronics at Central Community College and served as Dean of Industrial Trades before retiring in 1996. He served on the board at the Hastings Library and volunteered at the Food Pantry. He enjoyed fishing, tennis and traveling. Carl was a renaissance man, the original do it yourselfer and tinkering to make anything work, He loved to learn as much as he loved to teach. Carl was an avid tennis player and also enjoyed a good bike ride. He liked visiting the mountains, hiking, fly fishing and always sharing a good glass of wine at the end of the day with family and friends. Carl and his wife Mershonne loved to travel and had many great adventures in Europe and the United States. Carl will be greatly missed by all.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents.
