Carl Swearingen

Hastings resident, Carl A. Swearingen, 81, of 1620 Apache, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at his home following along struggle with emphysema.

Services are Monday, January 28, 2008; 11:00 A.M. at Livingston Butler Volland Chapel with Pastor Karen Roback and Pastor Mary Jensen officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. The remains were cremated. Memorials may be given to Mary Lanning Lung Cancer Clinic 715 North St. Joseph Avenue, Hastings NE 68901. Book signing Friday, January 25, 2008 until 8 P.M., Saturday, January 26, 2008; 9 A.M. until 5 P.M. Monday, January 28, 2008 9 A.M. until service time. .

Carl was born October 1, 1926 on a farm southwest of Prairie View, Kansas, the third child of Charles and Mary (Hern) Swearingen, He attended country school and graduated from Logan, Kansas high school with the class of 1944. Carl farmed with his father from 1944 until 1950 when he entered the U.S. Army where he served until 1952. After military service he moved to Fairmont, Nebraska to work for his brother Ralph at the NKC grain elevator. He married Marjorie M. Jensen on September 25, 1955 at the Federated Church in Fairmont. Carl and Marjorie lived in Colorado and Kansas before moving to Hastings in 1959 where he worked for Garvey Elevators and later Farmland Industries. He was later employed at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital as stationary boiler engineer and manager of the hospital heating and air conditioning plant until retiring in 1991. Prior to retirement he also worked part time at the Hastings YMCA. He was a fifty year Masonic member holding membership in Masonic Lodges in Fairmont and Hastings. Carl enjoyed any kind of work with his hands and could repair almost anything. He enjoyed wood working and gardening, home remodeling and repairing cars. He also enjoyed traveling especially to visit his children and grandchildren.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Bessie Ebner and 2 brothers, Ralph and Albert.
