Darrel Heeren

Hastings resident, Darrel M. Heeren, 79, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Grand Island Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Visitation with family greeting friends and relatives will be Sunday, January 24, 2016; 1:00 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Private family burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery, Ayr at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Adams County Fair Foundation or family's choice.

Darrel was born at home, in rural Glenvil, Nebraska on March 4, 1936 to Edward M. & Grace (Stromer) Heeren. He attended grade school in rural Glenvil and graduated from Hastings High School in 1954. He volunteered for the U.S. Army and served from 1954 to 1956 in Germany. He was honorably discharged in November 1962 from the reserves. Darrel and Marian (Barnes) were married at the Second Presbyterian Church on July 10, 1960. Darrel worked at McDonald's Department Store Warehouse, Garvey Elevator, and when Farmland Industries came to Hastings he worked on the construction crew and then worked as an operator; retiring in 2001 after 39 years. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture, gardening, attending auctions and his main hobby of refurbishing antique corn equipment, which he showed at many farm shows in several states. Darrel was a past board member of the Adams County Fair Board and served two terms as President. Darrel fought a long and hard battle against Parkinson's disease.

Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and sister, Edna Marshall.
