Darrell Herman

Hastings resident Darrell L. Herman, 72, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at his home with his family at his side.

Services will be Monday, June 29, 2009; 10:00 am at North Shore Assembly of God Church in Hastings with Pastor Tony Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Milford, NE at 3:00pm located 4 miles west of Milford on Highway 6. Visitation is 1:00pm - 9:00pm on Sunday with the family present 6:00pm-8:00pm at Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the building fund of North Shore Assembly of God Church.

Darrell was born February 6, 1937 to Harvey and Eula (Miller) Herman in a sod house located in Morrill County, NE. When he was 3 years old they moved to Friend, NE where he attended school and graduated from Friend High School in 1955. He attended Central Bible Institute in Springfield, MO and Central Community College in Hastings, NE.

He married Arlene Campbell on June 8, 1956. Their first years of marriage were spent in Lincoln before moving to Hastings in 1961. There he was the owner and manager of the Overhead Door Company until 1988. Darrell loved working construction and sales, and at the time of his death he owned Darrell Herman Sales and sold for Wick Buildings. In the last 5 years he has won many Wick awards and honors including the Elite Club Award for 2008. This past year he was the top in sales for Wick Buildings District 12 which encompasses Nebraska, South Dakota and western Iowa.

Darrell loved serving his community. He was an active 4-H leader as his children were growing up. He served on the school board for Wallace District 60 Elementary for 7 years and Adams Central Jr/Sr High School for 24 years. He was a past member of the Nebraska Association of School Boards where he served as president elect. Darrell was named the Adams Central booster of the year in 1983-1984. In 1999-2000 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska Association of Athletic Directors. For the past 30 years Darrell announced varsity football games and wrestling meets where he was known as "the voice of the Patriots".

Darrell was passionate about living out his Christian faith and serving his local church. He was a member of Gideons International, Hastings Men of Promise, and was a Light for the Lost councilman. He also coordinated Strike Force, a volunteer workforce that constructed and refurbished Assembly of God churches throughout the Nebraska District. Darrell served on the Nebraska District Layman's Council for the Assemblies of God. As a member of North Shore Assembly of God he served in numerous capacities throughout the years: Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, choir director, worship leader, life group leader and board member. Darrell was the building coordinator for the current church expansion for North Shore Assembly of God.

Darrell is survived by a loving family that hopes to carry on his warm smile and service for the Kingdom: his wife, Arlene of Hastings; one daughter, Susan Haggard and her husband Kem of Wrangell, AK; two sons, Doug Herman and his wife Stephanie of Littleton, CO , and Dick Herman and his wife Lisa of San Marcos, TX; six grandchildren, Joshua Herman, Brianna Herman, Lucas Herman, Katelyn Herman, Christopher Haggard and Courtney Haggard; one brother, Harvey Herman and his wife Sally of Palmyra, VA; plus numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was welcomed to his Heavenly home by his youngest son, Dan; both parents; younger brother, Dick; daughter-in-law, Evon; and granddaughter, Ashli.
