Delbert Barrows

Services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15 at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. William G. Nottage-Tacey officiating. Private Family burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Mr. Barrows was born at his family home near Hansen, NE, to Truman and Bessie (Stone) Barrows on Jan. 6, 1911. He lived on the Hall Co. Line road (now titled "Barrows Road") for 96 years. He attended grade schools in Trumbull and Hansen, graduating from Hastings High School in 1929 where he was a varsity sprinter and National Honor Society member. He attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln for 2 years, studying agriculture and engineering. He then returned the work on the family farm. He married Eleanor Husman in 1943, living with her on their farm for 60 years. Delbert grew up farming alongside his father. During his lifetime of farming, he felt lucky spending his life doing what he loved. He also loved his workshop, and was intuitive about electrical and machinery design. A "gadgeteer", he created whirligigs, toys, and tractor attachments from junk. In 1936 his roof-mounted wind charger that provided electricity to the family home received national recognition. Delbert was active in Hansen Presbyterian Church until its closing, joined Hastings First Presbyterian Church in 1969, and recently attended Doniphan First United Methodist Church. He was a humble man with a kind, gentle spirit. He loved and accepted everyone unconditionally. His humor, wit and storytelling entertained many. His life was one fully lived and he is deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, one brother, two sisters, an infant granddaughter and a great nephew.
