Hastings resident, Delmar L. "Del" McCord, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Friday, May 27, 2011; 2:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Pastor Dorothy Aspegren officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Thursday, May 26, 2011; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M., and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare Hospice program.

Del was born on May 26, 1927 to Ralph & Albena (Tuma) McCord at Fairbury, Nebraska. One of four brothers and seven sisters, Del worked on the family farm as a youngster. Just before his eighteenth birthday in 1945, Del left the farm and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he received his high school diploma. He underwent basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois. Upon completion of basic, he was sent to Corpsman School at Naval Training Station, Farragut, Idaho. He completed this training and went to his assignment at Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) Naval Base as a Pharmacist's Mate-Petty Officer Third Class. One of his duties was taking motor-launches out to arriving hospital ships to off load wounded servicemen and transport them to the hospital. After finishing a two-year hitch in the Navy, Del returned to Fairbury where he and his brother Charles operated a service station. In 1948, Del moved to Hastings where he worked for the L. J. Messer Co., auto parts store. He married Barbara Ann Thorson/Pederson on January 31, 1953 in Hastings and their son, Delmar M. "Monty" McCord was born on November 7, 1953. Del operated the new Champlin service station, named "Del's 16th Street Service" from 1957 to 1966. He then started his own business selling fireproof safes and file cabinets and in 1969-1970 he owned and operated the Apco filling station on Highway 6. Del also did custom hay baling for clients around the area at this time. From 1973 to 1978 he was sales manager for the Trans-Continental Bolt Co., and then went on with his own business, "Independent Bolt & Nut Co." until retiring in 1998. Del, Barbara and Monty enjoyed riding and showing American Quarter Horses in the region. Del was a member of the American Legion Post #11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1346, Disabled American Veterans (life member) and Eagles Aerie #592.

Del was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Russell, and Lester; and sisters, Bessie McCord, Nyla Kohel, Donna Stauss, and Betty Rothhammer.
