Donald Anderson

February 14, 1932 — July 25, 2016

Hastings resident, Donald L. Anderson, 84, passed away Monday, July 25, 2016 at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

Services will be Friday, July 29, 2016; 11:00 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Special Olympics. Visitation will be Thursday, July 28, 2016; 6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. with family present, and one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Don was born in Hastings, Nebraska on February 14, 1932 to Odessa Merle (Hendrickson) Anderson and John P. Anderson. He had two siblings: Bernel and Ethelyn. As a child they moved to a farm three miles east of Pauline, Nebraska and lived there for three years before moving back to Hastings. Don attended District #26 in Pauline and finished his education in the Hastings Public Schools, graduating in 1950. He attended Hastings College for one year.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 4, 1952 and stayed until September 3, 1954 as a Company Clerk in a training battery. Don returned to Hastings and was employed by AGP, Garvey Elevators, Massey Ferguson, Mode O'Day, and Amas Farm Equipment as a mechanic. He was also a private pilot. Don retired in November 1995.

He met Virginia K. Romans in January 1955. In February 1957, he purchased a little side-by-side airplane and flew down to Springfield to see her several times. On December 31, 1960, Don and Virginia were married at First Congregational Church in Lebanon, Missouri and moved to Hastings. To this union three children were born: Ronald, Vickie, and John.

Don enjoyed bowling, bocce, and was a ski coach for the Special Olympics. He loved to fix anything that was broken.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia K. Anderson; father, John P. Anderson; mother, Odessa Merle Anderson; grandparents, Elizabeth and John Hendrickson; and siblings, Bernel Anderson and Ethelyn Templin.
