Hastings resident Donald L. Meininger, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 23, 2025 at his home.
Don was born February 9, 1934, on a farm north of Campbell, NE to Herbert & Irene (Brouillette) Meininger. He graduated from Nelson High School in 1951 and moved to Hastings shortly after. He married Shirley Reichstein in 1953 before attending Omaha Barber College where he graduated in 1957. He and Shirley made their home in Hastings and had two sons before divorcing in 1989.
Don initially worked for Hefneider & Kailey Barber Shops before opening his own shop in 1960. He eventually outgrew the space and opened Imperial Barber Shop inside Imperial Mall in 1970. He was awarded the Roffler franchise in 1971, alongside his business partner Bob Taylor of Lincoln. By 1978, he moved to South Burlington and added a warehouse to meet the growing demand of Roffler throughout the state. He married Shari Lewien Foote on March 2, 1996, and spent his final days as a barber working alongside his wife in her salon.
He was very involved throughout the community over the years as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma Club, Jaycees, served on the board of Lochland Country Club and was active within St. Mark’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, sister Evelyn Walling, brothers Bud & Dale Meininger and first wife Shirley.
Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family.
