Donald L. "Don" Runcie Jr.

Hastings resident Donald L. “Don” Runcie Jr., 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 23, 2024, in his home. 

Celebration of Life will be at 5 p.m. Friday, September 27, at the Hastings Elks Club in Hastings. Burial will be at a later date at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hastings. A book signing will be 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday, September 26, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s name can be made to the Hastings Elks Club. 

Don was born December 21, 1958, to Donald Sr. and VerJean (Pontine) Runcie. He was raised alongside his older brother John and was a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church. 

He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in May of 1977 before attending The College of Hair Design in Lincoln, NE where he earned his barber’s license in 1979, allowing him to pursue a lifelong career as a barber for the next 44 years. He began his career at Ron’s Barbershop working for Ron, moved to City Slickers working alongside Bill and Harry, and eventually opened his own shop, First Street Barber and Beauty. 

In 1982, Don married Tina McGinnis and together they had four children, Katie, Bryan, Emily, and Andrew. 

In November of 1984, Don would join the Hastings Fire Department where he served over the next 25 years before retiring in 2009. 

He was a man of many past times and often could be found at the bowling alley participating in leagues, on the golf course and softball fields, or enjoying friends and drinks at one of the many local spots. 

Don also was a dedicated member of the Elks Club for the last 17 years, always ready and available to help with whatever was needed. He served as a trustee for three years as well as an inner guard and was awarded Elk of the year multiple times. 

He was loved by many and will be missed immensely. 

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John.
