Doretha Rhodes

Hastings resident, Doretha M. "Dottie" Rhodes, 77, passed away Monday, April 11, 2011 at her home.

Services will be Thursday, April 14, 2011; 1:00 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 12, 2011; 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 13, 2011; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and 1 hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Dottie was born August 2, 1933 in Newman Grove, Nebraska to Harry G. & Irene E. (Watson) Shockey. She moved to Hastings in 1944 attended schools in both Newman Grove and Hastings. On June 24, 1964 she married Donald Rhodes. Dottie was a homemaker and childcare provider for many years. She was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church. Dottie's family was the most important part of her life. She dedicated herself entirely to being the most loving wife, mother and grandmother anyone could ever ask for. Dottie was her grandkids' greatest fan. From roller hockey to dance recitals, school plays or volleyball, no matter what event grandma was always there. Dottie was an avid race fan who loved watching her son and son-in-law race. Dottie loved to play scrabble and wouldn't let Don make up his own words. She also enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, doing crossword puzzles, she was a human dictionary. She loved going camping with her family. Dottie crocheted many beautiful things for family and friends. Her grandchildren cherish their baby blankets grandma made with all of her love. Dottie fought a long hard battle the last 12 years and taught us all about strength. Throughout her illnesses she never lost her witty sense of humor and never gave up. She loved us unconditionally with her heart and soul as we will continue to love her forever and ever.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Carroll, Orville, and Kenneth; and sister, Beverly.
