Former Hastings resident Doris Helen (Thurnau) Ruhs, 97, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019, in Loveland, CO.
Services are Wednesday, April 17, 2019, 10:30 a.m. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings, with Pastor Paul Warneke officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to the Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO to be used for large print books. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Doris was born April 12, 1921, in Riverton, NE to Fred & Elizabeth Thurnau. Doris was their second girl. There were five girls born to them; Alma, Doris, Gladys, Loretta and an infant daughter that died shortly after birth. She and her sisters grew up on a farm and attended country schools. Doris worked as a receptionist for a funeral director in Campbell, Ne. She attended college for one summer to become a country school teacher. She taught for a couple of years. Doris met her husband Leon E. Ruhs.They married on May 21, 1942. They had one daughter, Treva Ann. They ran an egg and milk store in Campbell, NE. She and Leon moved to Sutton and operated a grocery store.
They moved to Hastings and lived there about 30 years. She worked for Ray Feed & Produce until it closed, Hycke Grain Elevators as a bookkeeper, and Great Plains Chrysler as an accountant. Doris moved to Loveland, CO, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. While in Loveland she did volunteer work and worked at Agapeland Christian Book & Gift store. Doris lived at Windsor Health Care for many years.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister; and her husband, Leon.
