Dorothy Shiffler

Hastings resident, Dorothy "Dee" D. Shiffler, 97, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at College View Assisted Living, Hastings, Nebraska.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, August 15, 2015; 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Hastings with Rev. Charles M. Webster officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Harrold Shiffler Scholarship at Hastings College or First Presbyterian Church, Hastings. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Dee was born Dorothy Jane Dewey on December 3, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa to Frank H. Dewey and Nellie Blanche (Lenington) Dewey. She graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1935, from Grinnell College in 1939, and from Syracuse University, receiving a Master's degree in Library Science in 1946. She married Harrold C. Shiffler in Des Moines on August 14, 1948. They moved to Iowa City, where Harrold completed his PhD in Speech and Theatre Arts. In 1959 they moved to Hastings, where Harrold had accepted a position at Hastings College, and Dee became the professional cataloguer at Hastings Public Library from 1959 until 1983. In addition to her work as a librarian, Dee made elaborate costumes for Hal's theatre productions at the college. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Association, and her beloved book club, Finches of the Grove. She was a 67-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, becoming a charter member of Chapter GK in Hastings in 1966. She and Harrold enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and in Europe after retirement. After Harrold passed away in 1997, she remained in her own home, moving to College View Assisted Living community in 2007. She retained a full and active social life both within and outside her new community.

Dee was preceded in death by husband, Harrold; sister, Helen (Olson); and brothers, Frank L. and Carroll Dewey.
