Dr. Arthur Langvardt

Hastings resident, Dr. Arthur L. Langvardt, 94, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Mary Lanning HealthCare, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Sunday, August 19, 2012; 2:30 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. William Nottage-Tacey officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Hastings College Foundation (Scholarships) or First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Saturday, August 18, 2012; 2:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. with family present at the funeral home.

Arthur was born June 16, 1918 in Junction City, Kansas to J.J. & Ada (Collins) Langvardt. He graduated from Junction City High School, Emporia State Teachers College, and received his Masters & PhD in English from University of Colorado in Boulder. He married Eunice Wiley on June 11, 1941 in Junction City, Kansas. Arthur began his teaching career as a high school English/Latin teacher in Hill City, Kansas from 1940-1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served actively from June 9, 1942 to December 14, 1945 at Ft. Riley, Kansas in the Cavalry Division. After his discharge he served 25 years as a part of the U.S. Army Reserves until retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Arthur joined the English faculty at Kansas State University and taught there from 1947-1963. He moved to Hastings and Hastings College as English Department Chairman in 1963 and later served as its Academic Dean for 14 years. At his request he returned to classroom teaching and spent the remainder of his career years at Hastings College doing what he loved best-teaching. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; Chairman of National Conference of College Deans; and he was inducted into Pro Rege at Hastings College in 1999, the highest non-academic honor bestowed by the college for contributions to the college.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and five sisters.
