Hastings resident, Dr. George L. Welch, 70, of 303 West Lochland Rd, died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at his home.
Memorial services will be Thursday, March 4, 2004; 2:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Private family burial prior to service at Parkview Cemetery both at Hastings, Nebraska.
Dr. Welch was born April 3, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri to George L. Sr. & Irene (Bray) Welch. When he was three years old, his family moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. He attended Shenandoah public schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School in 1951. He attended the State University of Iowa, Iowa City, receiving his undergraduate degree in 1955. He then attended the State University of Iowa College of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1958. He did his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas where he served as Chief Resident. He also did a cardiology fellowship at the University of Kansas. On June 17, 1955, he married Charlotte Dafoe in Shenandoah, Iowa. They were the parents of four children, John, Jennifer, Janet and Barbara. Dr. Welch began his medical practice in Hastings, Nebraska, joining the practice of Dr. Paul Charlton and Dr. Gerald Kuehn in 1964. At the time of the Vietnam War, he was called into service and served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He returned to Hastings and continued his practice until retiring from private practice in 1991. He worked for three years at Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska until retiring in 1995. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Lochland Country Club. He was a past member the Rotary, Adams County Medical Society, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He had a lifetime enjoyment of golf, family and home.
Dr. Welch was preceded in death by his parents.
