Hastings resident, Dr. John H. "Doc" Ewing, 88, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.
Services will be Thursday, July 13, 2017; 10:30 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Hastings Noon Lions Club. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 12, 2017; 10:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
John was born October 13, 1928, in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Leonard Z. and Ruby D. (Boyer) Ewing. John grew up in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1946. He played the saxophone, sang in an octet, played football and ran track. He then served in the US Navy during WWII for 2 years. After the Navy, he attended and graduated from UNL. In 1952, he started teaching and coaching in Tecumseh, Nebraska. In 1954, he was hired at Hastings Junior High School. He earned his Master's Degree and Doctorate Degree in Education. He taught and was Assistant Principal and finally Principal for nearly 30 years. John married Mary Jean (Bailey) June 6, 1954, in Omaha. Mary died May 23, 2012.
John was a member of the Hastings Noon Lions Club (perfect attendance for 56 years), Nebraska State Board of Education, Phi Delta Kappa, Dean of Acacia and Hastings Education Association.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary and brother Billy Ewing.
