John was born February 18, 1921, in Upland, Nebraska to Lewis Alfred and Anna Frances (Schaff) Seberg. During World War II the dental program was accelerated and John and his brother Herb graduated from the College of Dentistry in Lincoln within seven months of each other, Herb in January 1944, and John graduated in August 1944. He was one of three brothers to graduate from the Dental College in Lincoln, Nebraska. After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, John decided to practice dentistry in Florida. It was while he was working at the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, FL that he met his wife Hazel. They were married on September 6, 1949, and she preceded him in death on April 11, 2003.
"When I decided blood was thicker than water I came back," John said of his move back to Nebraska. He and his brother Herb opened their dental practice, Seberg & Seberg in Hastings, February 3, 1947. "When we started we had to train our own assistants," John said. "They didn't have dental hygienists in Nebraska. Of course, I had worked with dental hygienists in Florida."
Seeing the need for dental hygienists John played a key role in getting dental hygiene programs started at the College of Dentistry in Lincoln and Central Community College in Hastings. Six years later on February 3, 1953, John and Herb moved from their Second Street, downtown, third-floor location to their newly built residential dental clinic at 9th and Denver.
John joined the Nebraska Dental Association in 1945 and served as a member or chairman of several councils. He was a past president of the Academy of Dental Practice Administration, the Dental Alumni Association in 1961, and the Southwest District Dental Association. He was a member of the Dean's Club and the Burnett Society and was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
In 2003, he retired from dentistry. John received the Distinguished Service Award from the UNMC Dental Alumni Association in 1982. In 1983 the Nebraska Dental Association recognized John for his services as a dentist. For over 50 years John has shared his knowledge with fellow dentists, offered his expertise to any cause furthering good dentistry, and encouraged those around him to succeed. His final legacy were his children and those that have been influenced by his commitment to his profession, his friends, and to his family.
John wrote numerous articles for "The Journal of the Nebraska Dental Association," and "The Chronicle" of the Omaha District Dental Society. In 2004 John received the Alumni Association Alumni Achievement Award. John received an Honorary Associates Degree from Central Community College - Hastings Campus in 2010.
John was also a member of First United Methodist Church, Adams County Dental Association, Masons, Shrine, past president of Lions Club, State Chairman of Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American Legion Post 11, and Lochland Country Club.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hazel Seberg, son Eric Seberg, and brothers, Herb Seberg, Glenn Seberg, and LaVern Seberg.
