Dr. Richard DVM

Former Hastings resident, Dr. Richard Ray Bowen, DVM, 82, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Grand Island Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Memorial service will be Friday, August 17, 2012; 10:00 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Dr. William Nottage-Tacey officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Central Nebraska Humane Society where Richard served on the Board of Directors, 1312 Sky Park Road, Grand Island, Nebraska 68801. There will be no visitation.

Richard was born August 8, 1930 in LaGrange, Ohio to Paul & Melva (Halliwell) Bowen. He graduated from Nelson High School in Nelson, Ohio, and received his Bachelor's and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Richard served with the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant from 1951 until 1955. He married Mary Lee Grissom on July 3, 1962 in Great Falls, Montana; she preceded him in death in 1994. Richard moved to Hastings in 1990 from Silver Spring, Maryland. He worked as a veterinarian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 32 years and retired in 1990. Richard married Alice Anson Mahood in 1996 in Hastings. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings, Nebraska; Ohio State University Alumni Association; Ohio State University Alpha Psi Fraternity; Cosmopolitan Club, Grand Island, Nebraska; Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. #246, Garrettsville, Ohio; and American Legion Post #3, Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a past member of National Association of Federal Veterinarians; American Veterinary Medical Association; Lochland Country Club; Stadium Dorms Alumni Association Ohio State University; and Noon Kiwanis Club, Hastings, Nebraska.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary Lee (Grissom) Bowen; and son, Earl vonForell.
