Retired Hastings dentist, Dr. Edwin W. Lebsack, 89, passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Nebraska after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, March 15, 2014; 10:30 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastingswith Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. His wishes were to be cremated, there will be no visitation.
Edwin was born at home in the "German Salt Creek Bottom" of Lincoln, Nebraska to John & Marie (Lenhardt) Lebsack. As a boy, he delivered newspapers and was a golf caddy at the Lincoln Country Club. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he was a member of the 1941 state championship Lincoln High football team and was a long jumper on the track team. He and his brother, Wilbur, often spent summers working on his uncle's farm in Billings, Montana. Edwin served during World War II at the Naval Airbase on Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific Theater. After the war he married the girl next door, Donna Eichorn, on August 31, 1946. She preceded him in death on October 5, 1982. Ed graduated from the University of Nebraska Dental College in 1952. He practiced for one year in Chappell, Nebraska before coming to Hastings in 1953. He practiced dentistry in Hastings for 36 years. Edwin loved gardening, bowling and fishing for trout with his cousins in Montana. He was a lifelong Husker fan and had season tickets through the Coach Bob Devaney and Coach Tom Osborne years. He enjoyed driving sports cars, especially red ones. His favorite was a Corvette Z06 that he purchased when he was in his eighties. Edwin was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. He was a past member of the American Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, and the Southwest District Dental Society. Ed was a charter member of Lochland Country Club. Additionally, he was a past member of the Hastings Junior Chamber of Commerce, Hastings Chamber of Commerce, Elks, and Lions clubs.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; brother; and wife, Donna Lebsack.
