Eldon Bassett

April 3, 1925 — March 8, 2017

Hastings resident, Eldon W. Bassett, 91, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Sunday, March 12, 2017; 5:30 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 13, 2017; 10:30 A.M. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Hastings Catholic Schools Trust, St. Michael's Catholic Church Endowment Fund, or Meals on Wheels. Visitation will be Sunday, March 12, 2017; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present at 4:30 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Eldon was born April 3, 1925 in Adams County, Nebraska to Albert & Etta (Valentine) Bassett. He graduated from Hastings High School. Eldon served in the U.S. Navy from October 24, 1944 until July 5, 1946. He married Lois A. Smidt on May 29, 1947 in Hastings, Nebraska. They would have been married 70 years on May 29, 2017.

Eldon returned from the navy and began his career as an apprentice for Hunt Electric, shortly thereafter he was employed by Guarantee Electric where he worked for 44 years. During this time Eldon was proactive in advancing his career to become a Master Electrician. He was recognized in his field for his expertise in the ag-electrical industry. Eldon became manager of Guarantee Electric until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Men's Club, Third Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion and V.F.W. Eldon was a past member of Lochland Country Club, past member and President of Hastings Catholic Activities Association, where he and Lois received the HCAA Hall of Fame Award. Eldon had served on the City of Hastings Electrical Board, board of directors of Senior Action, Inc. and delivered Meals on Wheels.

His greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family. Eldon particularly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. He loved watching St. Cecilia sports, Nebraska football, hunting, singing, dancing, and golfing.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Wilma Busath.
