Eleanor was born February 8, 1919 to Henry Herman & Catherine Marie (Post) Thaden at the family farmstead located just south of Doniphan and about a half mile west of Highway 281 on what is now called Lepin Road. May, 1920, she was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Doniphan, Nebraska. In the fall of 1925, Eleanor started school at Hall County District 46 and received her 8th grade diploma in May, 1933. Eleanor was received into full Communion with the Lutheran Church by the solemn rite of Confirmation on June 25, 1933. Continuing her education, Eleanor known to her friends as "Ollie", attended and graduated from Doniphan High School in May, 1937. After graduation, she moved to Hastings and worked as a waitress at the Queen City Cafe, and as bookkeeper for a Hastings dentist. She married Lloyd John Poen on January 10, 1943 at the home of her parents in Doniphan, Nebraska. Lloyd was the son of Bennett and Mary (Brader) Poen. Beginning their new life together, they moved to a farm located ½ mile east of Showboat Boulevard on Highway 74 (East Monument Road) near Pauline, Nebraska. Eleanor was a member of Hanover Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School. In July, 1963, Eleanor became postmaster of the Post Office in Pauline, Nebraska. She served as postmaster until the postal service discontinued the Pauline Post Office on February 24, 1967. After nearly 50 years of farming, Eleanor and Lloyd moved to Hastings in 1991. She was predeceased by her husband on October 1, 1995. She enjoyed gardening and always had a yard full of beautiful flowers. There wasn't anything that she couldn't grow. If you stopped by the house to visit, she always had homemade cookies for her guests. Eleanor will be greatly missed.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Karen Kay Poen in June, 1957; and husband, Lloyd on October 1, 1995.
