Eleanor was a hard worker. While working in Hastings at the Swift Company wrapping butter for the troops in Texas for 25 cents an hour, she answered the call for women to work at the bomber plant in Omaha. She attended school to qualify as Rosie the Riveter and was hired by the Glenn L. Martin Plant building the B-29 bombers. She actually worked on the team that built the Enola Gay, the B-29 that ended WWII. She made 65 cents an hour and worked 12-hour days and was locked in and not allowed to leave until the day was done.
Eleanor married Dean E. Roberts of Harborcreek, PA on September 15, 1945, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese. They moved to Girard, PA when her husband was discharged from the Air Force where he had been serving as a pilot based in Lincoln. They were blessed with two children; a son and a daughter. They raised their family in OH. After the death of her son and then her husband, Eleanor moved her wholesale sewing business to Hastings. She opened the Calico House Quilt Shop in 1979 in Hastings. She continued to operate both businesses until she retired in 1985. Eleanor was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, PEO Chapter GZ, Hastings Quilters Guild, and the Hastings Piecemakers. She enjoyed playing bridge and quilting.
