Elizabeth A. Benson, 93, of Perkins Pavilion, died Monday, November 19, 2001 at Perkins Pavilion.
Memorial service will be Friday, November 23, 2001; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Chapel with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Private interment.
Elizabeth A. Benson was born March 4, 1908 in Rochester, New York to Albert F. & Bessie (Peattie) Benson. After graduating from High School she earned her teaching degree from Central School of Hygiene and Physical Education in 1929. She taught at Berea College, Berea, Kentucky from 1929-1933 with the Physical Education Department. She taught for 34 years at Stephen's College in Columbia, Missouri from 1935 -1968. She received her Masters Degree in 1941 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. In 1959, Elizabeth was instrumental in organizing the first day camp for handicapped children in Columbia, Missouri and directed the camp for several years. She was the Director of the Cerebral Palsy Day Care Center, Columbia, Missouri in 1968-1969 and from 1969-1973, she was State Program Consultant for United Cerebral Palsy Association of Missouri. She moved from Missouri to Hastings, Nebraska in 1976. In 1985, she moved to Estes Park, Colorado and returned to Hastings in January of 1990. Later that year, she moved to Rochester, New York to be near her ailing sister. After her sister's death, she returned to Hastings, Nebraska. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, YWCA, AARP, National Retired Teachers Association, AAUW- Friends of the Library and First Presbyterian Church of Hastings and American Association for Retired Person, Hastings Chapter. She was past President of Association for Education of Young Children, Missouri Chapter, Council for Exceptional Children, Association for Professional Workers in Cerebral Palsy and a board member for Wonderland Camp Foundation of Missouri. Elizabeth enjoyed photography, weaving guild, bird watching, hiking and all athletic events.
Elizabeth A. Benson was preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister, Lois Benson.
Memorial maybe given to First Presbyterian Church
