Elmer Hohlen

Hastings resident, Elmer W. Hohlen, 83, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, September 14, 2009; 3:00 P.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Saturday, September 12, 2009; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M., Sunday, September 13, 2009; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home, and 1 hour prior to service at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Monday. Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Mary Lanning Hospice.

Elmer was born March 16, 1926 in Hastings, Nebraska to William & Clara (Grothen) Hohlen. He attended District 31 School before graduating from Hastings High School in 1943. He married Colleen Kort on July 23, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blue Hill, Nebraska. To this union they raised seven children, 16 grandchildren, and four great-grandsons, with an additional great-grandchild to be born in November. He farmed north of Hastings and was a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving on several committees, and was on the Church Council. He also served on the School Board for District 31, was involved with the National Farmers Organization and the Farmers Union. He enjoyed farming and his favorite hobby was auto racing. He especially enjoyed coffee with friends and neighbors.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers; Lloyd and Walter Hohlen.
