Hastings resident, Elvira "Mittens" Shively, 85, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Nebraska.
Memorial services will be Monday, February 22, 2010; 11:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings, with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. There will be a private family burial at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to Faith Lutheran Church.
Elvira was born July 14, 1924 in Carroll, Nebraska to Fred & Kathryn (Krei) Kaul. Her family moved to Hastings when she was a young child. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1942. She married Jack T. Shively in 1952. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1991. She worked for A H Jones as an executive secretary. She then was a homemaker and raised her children. In 1981, she worked for Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital as the auxiliary secretary and also worked as the jewelry buyer for the gift shop. She was also the candy striper coordinator, and served on the auxiliary board as the gift shop chairwoman. She was a key volunteer and participant in the early Mary Lanning special event "The Stars Come Out". She retired in 1996 from the auxiliary work, but continued to volunteer with the auxiliary until 2004. She retired with over 3,300 volunteer hours. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and was very active in their blood drives. She was very active in the Faith Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School and catechism. She was also a part owner and bookkeeper at Shively Conoco.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack T. Shively; three brothers, Walter Kaul, Rev. Arthur Kaul, and Vernon Kaul.
