Estella Friend

June 23, 1908 — December 20, 2005

Hastings resident, Estella 'Stella; Friend, 97, of Perkins Pavilion, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Perkins Pavilion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 24, 2005; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Mrs. Friend was born June 23, 1908 in Hastings, Nebraska to George & Katherine (Schmidt) Bauer. She lived most of her life in Hastings and married Steve Friend in Hastings, Nebraska in May of 1933. He preceded her in death on August 31, 1968. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for years in the photographic field. Prior to the process of colored film, she made her living doing oil painting of studio photographs. She worked for several studios over the years, including Jensen's, Haberman's and Weber's Studio. With the process of time, she began working in developing, retouching and other fields of photography. Mrs. Friend was a gifted seamstress and loved to sew anything and everything. She did alterations in her spare time; created dance costumes simply by looking at sketches and always provided her daughter with custom prom dresses. Her favorite activity for many years was bowling and over the years she made many wonderful friends on the various leagues that she joined. In her later years, her favorite sewing projects were her precious, embroidered baby quilts. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the DOES. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff at Good Samaritan Village who loved and cared for her, first at The Villa and later Perkins Pavilion.

Mrs. Friend was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Steve and three sisters, Eloise Bauer, Caroline Bauer and Blanche Germain.
