Esther was born July 11, 1926, in Hastings, NE to Fred & Mabel (Hobrock) Schroeder. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1943 She was baptized, confirmed and married at First St. Paul’s Church, continuing a 4 generation legacy that was instrumental in the early formation of the Church.
During WW11 she worked at Dutton Lainson. She married David L. Hoagland on June 16, 1946. They moved east of Juniata and farmed till 1978 when David passed away from leukemia. Esther stayed on the farm place till 2021 (74 years) when she moved just 3 miles east to Homestead Assisted Living. They were blessed with 4 children and many memories with family, friends and neighbors. And a lot of hard work.
Esther devoted her life to being a farm wife, helping alongside in the fields and with the animals. Since she was young, she always said she would rather be outside helping.
The love of her life was her animals, especially her Sheltie dogs. They were her closest companions. She raised chickens, guineas, ducks and cats. She loved to share the new baby kittens or chickens with her grandchildren.
Esther spent endless hours in her yard and garden and on her John Deere mower. She always had a cupboard full of canned goodies. She took pride in showing her flowers at the county fair.
Esther was active in her church all of her life. She taught kindergarten Sunday School for over 50 years. Every summer she took her class to her farm to show them the baby animals and have a picnic snack. She was in circle groups and Bible study groups. She spent time visiting family and friends and helping them as needed.
Raising 4 children was not easy but she still found time to support them in all their various activities: band, choir, 4-H, sports, music lessons, swimming lessons, church activities and VBS. She has always loved fishing and would drop everything for the chance to go. Her great grandsons loved to take her.
The family would like to extend a special thank you, to the nursing staff at Homestead Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice.
