Esther Tarnay

October 3, 1926 — February 26, 2007

Former Hastings resident, Esther M. Tarnay, 80, of Haven Home, Kenesaw, died Monday, February 26, 2007 at Haven Home.

Services will be Friday, March 2, 2007; 10:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, rural Juniata, Nebraska.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 28, 2007; 5pm-9pm, Thursday, March 1, 2007; 9am-9pm with family present from 7pm-8:30pm at the funeral home & Friday, March 2, 2007, 1 hr. prior to service at the church. Memorials to Faith Lutheran Church or Concordia Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Tarnay was born October 3, 1926 in Adams County to Rudolph & Eva (Koestler) Lisius. She attended District 29 Rising Star & Christ Lutheran School and graduated from Hastings High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1948 and her Master's of Social Work from George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1950. She was Social Service Supervisor at Robert Koch Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri and later the Director of Department of Social Work at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois. She took early retirement and worked at Brentwood North in Wilmette, Illinois and fully retired in 1992 and moved to Hastings, Nebraska. In April of 1959, she married Julius Tarnay in St. Louis, Missouri and he preceded her in death in 1990. She was a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), Certified Social Worker, State of Illinois (CSW), National Rehabilitation Association, Society for Hospital Social Work Directors, Alpha Kappa Delta (National Sociology Honorary), Phi Beta Kappa, Adams County Historical Society and volunteered for numerous groups in Adams County. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she volunteered extensively and was a past member of the Care Ministry Team. She loved gardening, baking and pets.

Mrs. Tarnay was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Ruth Katzberg and one niece and one nephew.
