Evelyne Gartner

Evelyne H. Gartner, 91, of Edgar, formerly of Hastings, died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Rose Brook Care Center, Edgar, Nebraska.

Services will be Saturday, July 19, 2014; 11:00 A.M. at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings, NE. Burial will be Saturday, July 19, 2014; 1:30 P.M. in Grand Island City Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, July 18, 2014; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Evelyne Hope Gartner was born April 20, 1923, in Oxford, Nebraska to Harry C. & Mabel Mae (Zade) Menagh. She grew up and attended school in Grand Island. She worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. Evelyne married Carl Ernest Gartner in 1954. They farmed near Spring Ranch and later moved to Fairfield and then to Hastings. The couple had two children, son, Glen, and daughter, Sherri. Evelyne ran the café in Fairfield and was known for her cinnamon knots and pies. She was active in the Spring Ranch Homemakers Club. Evelyne and Carl divorced in 1962 and then remarried in 1971. She was a member of the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church, which became the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Grand Island and later Faith United Methodist Church. She was active in the church and taught Sunday school. She was involved in the Truth Rebekah Lodge No. 132. Evelyne enjoyed "secret work" at the lodge, playing bingo and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Evelyne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl, on December 13, 1998; infant son, Curtis Wayne Bauer on December 29, 1941; brothers & sister-in-law, Floyd Menagh, Roland Menagh, Darel & Dee Menagh; and brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Walter & Lenore Gartner, Marie & James Phillips, Frieda Gartner, Ella & Siebolt Henrichs, Herman & Gladys Gartner, Raymond & Jane Gartner, Paul Gartner and Herbert Gartner.
