Fern Shaw

Former Holstein resident, Fern Shaw, 101, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Friday, July 2, 2010; 10:30 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church, Holstein, with Pastor Trudy Hanke officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery, Holstein. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 30, 2010; 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., Thursday, July 1, 2010; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church, Holstein, Nebraska; Holstein Cemetery Fund; or Mary Lanning Hospice.

Fern was born July 2, 1908 in Juniata, Nebraska to Joseph F. & Martha R. (Mecham) Gangwish. On August 10, 1926 she married John L. Shaw. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1999. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Holstein where she received her 75 year pin. Fern was very active in the church and served in various offices in the church. She served on the Holstein School Board, and was a member of the Jolly Neighbors Extension Club and Holstein Coffee Club. She loved to bake pies and cookies for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family always went to Grandma Shaw's after church for goodies and fellowship. Fern was known as Grandma Shaw to many people. Fern and John were married 72 years and they enjoyed fishing and gardening together.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John L. Shaw; daughter, Marguerite Sorensen-Saylor; son, Harold D. Shaw; sons-in-law, Lloyd Sorensen, Dennis Plambeck, and Merle Shineman; grandchildren, Crystal Plambeck, Dan Hoffman, Charles Winstead, and Julie Sorensen; great-grandson , Jeremy Sorensen; 8 brothers; and 4 sisters.
