Former Hastings resident, George Joseph Schumm. 90, of 108 W. Syria, Cairo, Nebraska, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island, Nebraska.
Rosary will be Sunday, May 31, 2009; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home, Hastings, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 1, 2009; 11:00 A.M. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Grand Island, Nebraska with Father Mark Maresh officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Saturday, May 30, 2009; Noon - 9:00 P.M. &, Sunday, May 31, 2009; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. at the Butler-Volland funeral home in Hastings & Monday, June 1, 2009, 1 hour prior to service at the church in Grand Island. Memorials may be given to the family to be established at a later date.
Mr. Schumm was born February 22, 1919 in Lawrence, Nebraska to George W. & Agnes Mary (Reining) Schumm. He attended school in Lawrence until the 8th grade and received an honorary High School diploma in 2006 from Centura High School through the United States Government. He served in the United States Army during WWII from November 3, 1941 to November 16, 1945 earning the rank of Corporal. In 1944, he married Dorlene Niemeyer. He worked for Hastings Utilities for 29 years. He married Bernice Hollister on November 22, 1973 and she preceded him in death in 2000. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Platte Duetsche Society in Grand Island, Eagles Club, where he was past President, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus 4th Degree (November of 2008) American Legion and D.A.V where he was past State Commander in Hastings. His hobbies were playing the drums for the Westernaires & Jack and the Lumberjacks, going to the casinos (the Wheel of Fortune machine,) gardening, watching Polka Joe on TV, riding around Cairo in his scooter, camping, fishing, traveling in the RV, painting and his dog, Coco.
Mr. Schumm was preceded in death by his parents: wife, Bernice; sister, Aggie Gardiner; three brothers, Anthony, Joseph & Bernard; two angel great grandsons, Blake & Bryce and ex-wife Dorlene Schumm who died in 2007.
