Hastings resident, Gerald A. Kuehn, M. D., 92, passed away Friday, September 17, 2010 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Wednesday, September 22, 2010; 10:30 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. William Nottage-Tacey officiating. Private family burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday, September 20, 2010; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 21, 2010; 9:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family; a memorial will be established at a later date.
Gerald was born on February 14, 1918 in Murdock, Nebraska to Emil & Buena Kuehn. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1936. After graduating from the University of Nebraska in pre-med, he taught school and coached in Mead, Nebraska. He graduated from Med School at the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1945. While in Medical School he married his high school sweetheart Gladys Held on May 24, 1943. After 1 year of internship he spent two years in the Army mostly in the Philippines and South Korea. He then took a residency with the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Before beginning his medical practice in Hastings, Gerald practiced in Mitchell, South Dakota and at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska. Gerald and Gladys had two children, Jane Ann was born in Kansas City on November 16, 1948 and Bradley Jay was born in Mitchell, SD on November 17, 1950. Gerald moved to Hastings and started his practice in 1952. He became a Board Certified Specialist in Internal Medicine in 1957 and was recertified in 1977. Gerald retired from his medical practice in 1983. In 1984, he became the Medical Director at the Good Samaritan Village and became a Certified Medical Director in 1985. Gerald was very active in the First Presbyterian Church where he was a teacher and church leader, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved to hunt and play golf and was active in both the Four Rivers Sportsman's Club and the Elks Country Club Golf Course.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Jane Ann McCollum.
