Former Hastings resident, Gerald "Gary" Lee Melvin, 58, died Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Memorial services will be Monday, September 3, 2012; 10:00 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, Hastings with Rev. Marcus J. Mackay officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 2, 2012; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the family. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.
Gary was born June 5, 1954 to Lee & Viola (Mosier) Melvin in Hastings, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, Nebraska. Gary attended Hawthorne grade school and graduated from Hastings High in 1972. After high school he attended Hastings Central Community College and received a degree in Architectural Drafting. Gary married Shirley Reid on April 27, 1974, to this union was born two children Cory Melvin and Jeni Melvin. He went to work at Johnson Imperial Homes as a draftsman and project manager for Imperial Villages and worked in carpets department for Johnson Cashway. In 1994 he moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and went on the road for Shaw Industries until his health went bad. He went back to school at Southeast Technical Institute and received a degree for Associate of Applied Science in construction management and Associate of Applied Science in architectural/construction engineering technology. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a big Nebraska Husker football fan going to as many games as he could. He was a member of Sertoma Club and volunteered with Senior Community Service.
