Gilbert A. 'Gib' Barrows of 890 E. Oliver, rural Hastings, Nebraska, died Monday, November 12, 2001 at NHS University Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.
Private family burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Trumbull, Nebraska. Memorial services will follow on Friday, November 16, 2001; 3:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carl W. Utley & Rev. Matt Nieman officiating.
Gilbert A. 'Gib' Barrows was born on the family farm, January 21, 1918 in Hansen, Nebraska to Truman & Bessie (Stone) Barrows. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1936 and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He was a decorated for his service in WWII, seeing action as a B-24 Navigator in the 431st Bombardment Squadron of the 7th Air Force in the Pacific. He married Winifred 'Lynn' Worrell in Phoenix, Arizona in 1944. After the war, he signed on with Pan American World Airways. For 35 years, he was a Pan Am dispatcher and flight operations manager, spending ten years in the Philippines, ten years in Hong Kong and additional time in Honolulu, San Francisco, and Long Island, New York. After his retirement in 1981, he returned home to Hansen, Nebraska. His membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings brought him great comfort. He also heartily enjoyed being a docent at the Hastings Museum, an active Rotarian and a member of various community groups. Gib was a man of quiet strength, peaceful dignity and twinkling humor and will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.
