Gilbert "Gib" McWhirter

Trumbull resident Gilbert Eugene “Gib” McWhirter, 80, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, NE.

Celebration of Life is 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with Pastor Kent Rogers and Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in Greenwood Cemetery in Trumbull. Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church, Crossroads Rescue Mission, Trumbull Fire Department, or family’s choice. Visitation will be 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. with family present 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Gib was born on November 3, 1937, in Hastings, NE to Clifford and Grace (Markham) McWhirter. Gib grew up on a farm near Hansen, NE. He married Marilyn Saathoff on November 22, 1959. They lived on the farm until moving to Trumbull in 1989. Gib ran the gate at Kam Raceway when Brad & Steve raced go-carts. Gib farmed all his life and loved to go to farm sales, which led him to partner with Ken Hollister in buying and selling used machinery known as M & H Machinery.

He passed his love for agriculture and hard work ethic onto his three sons and grandchildren. He loved playing cards with his cousins and friends and played every morning at the Sugar Shack. He loved roller skating. Gib enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them participate in all their activities. He loved to dance, especially the polka.

Gib was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Bridget McWhirter; siblings, Robert, Lavern, and Myrna; brothers-in-law, Allen Schukei, Loran Quandt, Vernon Saulter, and Dwaine Pekarek; and sister-in-law, Fran Lau.
