Gladys was born on October 27, 1920 in Columbus, Nebraska to Edward H. and Hanna Mae (Russell) Held of Fullerton, Nebraska. She lived on the family farm and graduated with honors from Fullerton High School in 1937 where she was nominated to who's who. After graduating from business college she worked as a legal secretary and then became an efficiency expert for the government. Gladys married the love of her life, Gerald Kuehn, on May 24, 1943. Gerald said many times that he would not have finished medical school without Gladys' help. After his internship and two years in the Army they moved to Kansas City where Gerald did his residency with the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Before moving to Hastings, Gladys and Gerald lived in Mitchell, South Dakota and in Grand Island, Nebraska. Gladys and Gerald had two children, Jane Ann was born in Kansas City on November 16, 1948 and Bradley Jay was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on November 17, 1950. They moved to Hastings and started their practice in 1952. Gladys was very happy being a mother and housewife. Once her children were old enough she took a part time position at the Hastings Public Library. The job was perfect for her because she loved to read. While in Hastings Gladys was active in the First Presbyterian Church where she was a teacher and church leader. She was involved in scouts, brownies, PTA, PEO, Hospital Auxiliary and was the Adams County chair for the Nebraska Heart Fund. In addition to reading and other family activities, she loved to garden and travel. She was a very beautiful and caring person.
