Harold Poppe

Services will be Friday, October 12, 2007; 2:00 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Rodney Armon officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.Visitation will be Thursday, October 11, 2007; 5pm-9pm & Friday, October 12, 2007; 9am-11am at the funeral home & also 1 hr. prior to service at the church.

Mr. Poppe was born to Frank G. & Emma B. (Weiss) Poppe on January 25, 1923 in Carleton, Nebraska. He grew up in the Carleton/Davenport area. He attended country school and high school at Carleton. Harold married Lila Blumenthal on August 29, 1943 in Deshler, Nebraska. Harold served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during WWII as a Boatswain's Mate Second Class, on the LST 859 from July 31, 1944 until February 22, 1946. After returning from service, he worked at the United States Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings until its closure. He then worked at the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, Nebraska until he retired. Harold was a life member of the V.F. W. in Harvard, Nebraska. He was a member of the Harvard volunteer Fire Department from 1954-1969 and a member of the Harvard School Board, served two terms as mayor and was owner of Poppe's Sundries in Harvard. He also served on the Hall County Regional Planning Commission in Doniphan. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and raising thoroughbred race horses.

Mr. Poppe was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Stanley; three brothers, Leonard, LaVern & Virgil and one sister, Frances.
