Harriett Smith

December 27, 1935 — July 27, 2014

Hastings resident, Harriett L. Smith, 78, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at her home.

Memorial Services will be Friday, August 22, 2014; 1:00 P.M. at Grace United Methodist Church, Hastings with Rev. Cindy Karges officiating. Graveside Services will be Saturday, August 23, 2014; 1:00 P.M. at Oakdale Cemetery, Oakdale, Nebraska with Harriett's brother-in-law Don Wood CLS officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church or Meals on Wheels program both in Hastings, Nebraska.

Harriett Lee Wilkinson was born near Hugo, Colorado on December 27, 1935 to Harry Willard & Anna Elizabeth (Weeder) Wilkinson. She was raised in the Oakdale, Nebraska area graduating valedictorian of the Oakdale class of 1953. She married Donald K. Marsh on November 14, 1954. They farmed around the Neligh area in the early years. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1965 and raised four children in the family home she lived in for over 45 years. She was a homemaker who later owned the north Dairy Sweet in the 1970's. She then worked as the bookkeeper for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program from 1978 until her retirement. Her husband Don passed away July 17, 1986. She married Melvin L. Smith on March 4, 1989. They had many happy years together before Mel passed away on February 7, 1997. In her retirement years she was active in the Grace United Methodist Church choir, Rebekah Lodge #312, Grandmothers Bowling League, Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital health fair, local voting precincts and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed her grandchildren, watching sporting events, league bowling and Nebraska football, attending many games over the years.

Harriett was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Donald K. Marsh and Melvin L. Smith; sister, Barbara A. (Wilkinson) Marsh, brother, John "Jack" C. Wilkinson, sisters-in-law, Theda Marsh, Jean Evans, and Alice Yelken; and brothers-in-law, Ot Buelter, Eldon Marsh, Melvin Marsh, Dean Miller, and Warren Marsh.
