Former Hastings, Nebraska resident, Harriette Mila Charlesworth Lanning, 92, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at HCR Manor Care in Potomac, Maryland.
Memorial services will be Saturday, April 9, 2011, 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, April 8, 2011; 4:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Harriette was born November 12, 1918, in Ogdensburg, New York, to Fred and Lucy Charlesworth. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1936 and from Syracuse University in 1940 with honors in home economics. She married Charles Wilson Lanning on August 30, 1941, in Ogdensburg, New York. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls. They lived in Sheffield, Alabama, where four of their children were born: Charles F. Lanning, Mary Ruth Benson, Martha Harriette L. McMillen, and Doris Elizabeth Avalos. They moved to Louisiana, Missouri, where Edward George Lanning was born. The family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Charles worked for the Cooperative Farm Chemicals Association. Harriette was actively involved in her children's activities and was both a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Leader. She and her husband settled in Hastings, Nebraska, where Charles was the plant manager of CFCA until his retirement. Harriette was a member of the American Association of University Women, Chapter GK of P.E.O. serving as local President, United Methodist Women, Hastings Book Club and the YWCA. She enjoyed playing and teaching bridge. Her interests included reading, gardening, knitting, antiquing and traveling with her husband to visit children and grandchildren.
Harriette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles W. Lanning; son, Charles F. Lanning; and son-in-law, Shannon M. McMillen.
